Voluntary Recall of Mislabeled April Hill Frozen Cookie Dough Expanded as a Precaution to Include Fall Harvest Cookies

April Hill Theme Cookie Cutouts That Do Not List Egg in the Ingredients Include Fall Harvest Frozen Cookie Dough; Recall Applies to Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia

Sara Lee Bakery Group has expanded its voluntary recall of 5.99-pound cartons of frozen April Hill Theme Cookie Cutouts to include Harvest season cookies in the shapes of pumpkins and apples because eggs are not listed as an ingredient on the package. Consumption of these products by people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs may result in a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction. This product only poses a hazard to egg-sensitive individuals. Sara Lee Bakery Group is working together with the FDA in undertaking a voluntary recall of this product and also has notified the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network.

The 72-count packages of April Hill Harvest cookies had already been removed from grocery shelves, but they may remain in consumers' freezers. The cookies are safe for consumption except for people with allergies or sensitivity to eggs. There have been no consumer complaints regarding the Harvest cookies. The recall is being expanded as a precautionary measure.

The 5.99-pound packages were sold exclusively during the fall season at GFS Marketplace Stores in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio and to Gordon Food Service customers in those four states as well as Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The packages carry the April Hill brand name and are not marketed under the Sara Lee name. April Hill 5.99-pound cartons of Holiday cookies in the shapes of bells, trees and stars were previously recalled because of the mislabeled egg content.

The recall only applies to 5.99-pound April Hill cartons of 72 preformed frozen sugar cookies in Harvest and Holiday shapes. No other brands, products or sizes are involved in this recall. All April Hill products that declare "egg" in the ingredient panel are not affected.

Consumers may return the cookies to any GFS Marketplace store for a full refund. Consumers who have any questions or concerns should call Sara Lee Bakery Group toll-free at (800) 449-4284 (Extensions 8626, 8656 or 8676) between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CST Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Arnie's Bakery is voluntarily recalling its 12" Turtle Elegance Tortes because eggs are not listed as an ingredient on the package. This product only poses a hazard to egg-sensitive individuals. The company has received one complaint regarding this product. Arnie's Bakery is working together with the FDA in undertaking a voluntary recall of this product.

The mislabeled product was packed under the GFS Label and was distributed solely to GFS Marketplace Stores in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio and to Gordon Food Service customers in those four states as well as Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Gordon Food Service has alerted food service customers to the fact that eggs are included in the ingredients of this product. The recall applies to all lots of the GFS 12" Turtle Elegance Tortes. No other brands, products or sizes are involved in this recall.

Consumers may return the Tortes to any GFS Marketplace store for a full refund. Consumers who have any questions or concerns should call Arnie's Bakery toll-free at 1-800-343-4361 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Appetizing Plus Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Almonds in Mandel Bread

Appetizing Plus of Brooklyn, New York is recalling its packages of "Mandel Bread" because they may contain undeclared almonds. People who have allergies to almonds run the risk of serious life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

The recalled "Mandel Bread" was distributed to retail stores in Brooklyn. The product comes in clear plastic packages marked with lot #200277 and stamped with the expiration date 1/24/02.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered by NYS Food Inspectors, that the almond-containing product was distributed in packages that did not reveal the presence of almonds. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company's production and packaging process. Production of the product has been suspended until the company is certain that the problem has been corrected. Consumers who have purchased packages of "Mandel Bread" are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 718-437-3376.

Joaly Enterprise Company Announces Recall of Gel Candies Due to a Potential Choking Hazard

Joaly Enterprise Company is announcing the recall of Mini Fruit Jellys all flavors. The recall covers approximately 3,130 cases of 1500g/53oz jars/6 jars per case and 1,824 cases of 300g/10.5 oz cellophane bags/30 bags per case Mini Fruit Jelly because they represent a potential choking hazard. This candy, distributed nationwide to retail establishments, is sold under the names of Joelee, and the label describes the product as a Mini Fruit Jelly. The candy comes in small sealed plastic cups that contain gelatin with a chunk of fruit.

These candies contain the ingredient "konjac" (also known as conjac, konnyakn, yam flour, or glucomannan). The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Food and Drug Administration consider this type of candy to pose a serious choking risk, particularly to infants, children and the elderly. Local authorities have reported four children's deaths from choking in the United States associated with this type of jelly candy. There have also been reports of deaths in other countries.

Each jelly cup is about the size of a single-serve coffee creamer. The jelly cups are in a plastic bag or plastic jar. The flavors sold are mango, assorted fruit and other flavors. The candy bears warning labels, suggesting that it not be eaten by children under age three.

The FDA has issued two previous general warnings against consuming mini-cup gel candies that contain the ingredient "konjac." Although the agency issued an import alert to address importation of these candies in October, 2001, candies imported prior to the import alert are still in the U.S. market. These candies are sold under various brand names, distributed by various companies. Joaly Enterprise Company urges all consumers to return this product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (562-229-9455).
