McCall Farms Recalls Glory Foods Brand Canned Kale and Canned Turnip Greens Because of Possible Health Risk

 

McCall Farms of Effingham, South Carolina is voluntarily recalling 15,618 cases of Glory Foods brand Kale in 27-ounce cans and 9, 115 cases of Glory Foods brand Turnip Greens in 27-ounce cans because the product has the potential to be contaminated with foodborne pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, etc. The potential problem was discovered by the company; there have been no reported illnesses caused by this product.

 

The Glory Foods Turnip Greens is packed in 27-ounce metal cans, with the code "GK25/TGLC." The Glory Foods Kale is packaged in 27-ounce metal cans with the codes "GK25/KGLC" and "GK22/CGLC." Both products were distributed through retail stores throughout United States, primarily in the Eastern United States.

 

McCall Farms' quality control department discovered post-processing contamination in these two products and code lots; the source of the problem subsequently has been identified and corrected. No other McCall Farms/Glory Foods products are affected by this recall.

EnfaCare® LIPIL® Infant Formula Powder Recall

 

Mead Johnson Nutritionals, in keeping with our commitment to provide safe and healthy nutritional products, is initiating a voluntary recall of 505 cases of EnfaCare LIPIL 12.9 ounce powdered infant formula. The cases and cans are coded BME01, with an expiration date of January 1, 2004 (embossed 1JAN04). This voluntary recall is being initiated because the product is contaminated with Enterobacter sakazakii (E. sakazakii). E. sakazakii, commonly found in the environment, is a food-borne pathogen that can, in rare cases, cause sepsis (bacteria in the blood), meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain), or necrotizing enterocolitis (severe intestinal infection) in newborn infants, particularly premature infants, or infants with weakened immune systems. We are unaware of any reports of illness associated with E. sakazakii as a result of feeding infants product from batch BME01; however, product from batch BME01 should not be used.

 

EnfaCare LIPIL is a formula for infants with conditions such as prematurity. Five hundred five cases from this batch were shipped to hospitals, retail stores and WIC clinics nationwide during December 2002. No other batches of EnfaCare LIPIL are affected.

Pinnacle Foods Corporation of Mountain Lakes, NJ is recalling "Hearth Hero Meatball Sandwiches" mispacked in "Hearty Hero Cheeseburger Sandwich" Cartons. The meatball contain egg white protein that is not listed on the Cheeseburger Sandwich Carton. People who have allergy or severe sensitivity to egg white protein may run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

 

The "Hearty Hero Meatball Sandwiches" may have been distributed nationally through retail stores and food service outlets. No illnesses have been reported to date.

T. Marzetti Co. Recalls 12 Oz Bottles of Salad Dressing Due to Undeclared Anchovies

 

T. Marzetti Company of Columbus, Ohio is recalling their 12 oz bottles of "Two-Lightful Caesar" dressing, which may be mislabeled as "Two-Lightful Blue Cheese" dressing. The bottles labeled as "Two-Lightful Blue Cheese" dressing contains powdered anchovies, which is not declared on the product labels. People who have an allergy to anchovy fish run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

 

The bottles were shipped in 1,065 cases labeled as "Two-Lightful Caesar Dressing" and distributed to retail supermarkets located nationwide.

 

The product is packaged in 8-inch tall glass bottles identified as T. Marzetti's Two-Lightful Blue Cheese dressing, and is found in the Refrigerated Dressings section of the Produce Department. The UPC number is 70200-51018, and it has the expiration date "08/03/03W" stamped on the glass bottles.

 

The recall was initiated after it was discovered the Caesar dressing was distributed in packaging identified as Blue Cheese, which does not reveal the presence of anchovies. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the packaging process.

Amendt Corporation Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Non Fat Dry Milk and Egg Whites in County Fare White Cake Mix and BakerGirl White Cake Mix

 

Amendt Corporation, Monroe, Michigan, is recalling 18.5 oz. boxes of White Cake Mix, sold under the brand names County Fare and BakerGirl. They may contain undeclared Non Fat Dry Milk, and Egg Whites. People who have allergies to Non Fat Dry Milk, and Egg Whites run the risk of allergic reaction if they consume these products.

 

The recalled White Cake Mix was distributed Nationwide. The product comes in an 18.5 oz. carton with the following expiration dates: 09/20/2002 through 12/31/2003.

State Health Department Announces Voluntary Recall of Canned Diced Red Bell Peppers Due to Botulism Risk

 

Consumers should not eat Ful-Flav-R Food brand Diced Red Bell Peppers manufactured by Ful-Flav-R Foods of Oakland because the product may pose a risk of botulism, State Health Director Diana M. Bontá, R.N., Dr.P.H., announced today. No illnesses associated with the product, which is being voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer, have been reported.

 

The recall involves approximately 700 cases of the product packaged in 6 pound, 6 ounce cans with production code "APR04/RB291" on the lids. Customers who have purchased the product should immediately return it to the distributor or to Ful-Flav-R Food Products Company.

This product was distributed to schools, hospitals, restaurants, delicatessens and cafeterias throughout California. The company has notified the distributors of the product recall. No other products from Ful-Flav-R Food Products Company are involved in the recall.

This acidified food product is required to have a pH level below 4.6 to inhibit the growth of the bacteria responsible for producing the toxin. The firm has found that some of the product packed under this code has pHs above 4.6 and was inadequately acidified.

 

Botulism toxin, which cannot be detected by sight, taste or smell, can cause severe illnesses, including double vision, swallowing difficulties, weakness, vertigo and breathing difficulty. Consumers should seek immediate medical care if they develop these symptoms.
