Badia Spices Recalls Ground Oregano (Oregano Molido)

Badia Spices of Florida announced today that it is voluntarily recalling its Badia brand Ground Oregano (Oregano Molido) Upc #33844 00010, a 2 oz. bottle bearing Lot #092601 and an expiration date of 10/2006, distributed to retail stores in Florida; and New York. This recall is being effected on account of a possible salmonella contamination. A sampling from the Department of Agriculture was found to be positive for salmonella.

Salmonella can cause serious illness and sometimes-fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and other with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected eneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. Consumers are urged to check their kitchens for this product, and to discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or exchange.

When Ground Oregano (Oregano Powder) is used in preparing foods cooked at 165 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, the risk of food borne illness due to Salmonella is significantly reduced. Nevertheless, the company understands that some customers may not cook this product at such temperatures and wishes to notify the public accordingly. Consumers with questions or concerns are to contact Badia Spices, Inc. at 305-629-8000 or info@badia-spices.com.

FDA ANNOUNCES A RECALL BY ANHING CORPORATION OF MINI JELLY SNACK CUPS CANDIES DUE TO CHOKING HAZARD

The FDA is announcing the recall by Anhing Corporation, Los Angeles, California, of Rolin Brand "Lychee Nata De Coco Jelly" because this product presents a choking hazard. These candies are distributed nationwide. The candies are packaged in small sealed plastic cups. Each mini Jelly cup is about the size of a single-serve coffee creamer.

These candies contain the ingredient "konjac" (also known as conjac, konnyaku, yam flour, or glucomannan. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Food and Drug Administration consider this type of candy to pose a serious choking risk, particularly to infants, children and the elderly. Local authorities have reported six children's deaths from choking in the United States associated with this type of jelly candy. There have also been reports of deaths in other countries.

The candy is sold in either 10.5 oz bags in cases of 30 bags, or in 53.5 oz. tubs with 6 tubs to a case. Anhing Corporation has requested a recall through distributors and retailers to consumers. Consumers are urged to return this product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 323-221-8003.

In August and October 2001, the FDA issued general warnings against consuming mini-cup gel candies that contain the ingredient "konjac". In December 2001 and January 2002 two other firms recalled gel candies. In October 2001, the agency issued an Import Alert to prevent these candies from entering the country. Import Alerts identify problem commodities and communicate guidance to FDA field offices and the importing community for detention of products which appear to be in violation of the law. However, candies imported prior to the import alert are still in the US market. These candies are sold under various brand names and are distributed by various companies. The FDA continues to investigate and follow-up this issue.

Gemini Food Corporation Announces Recall of Jin Jin Mini Cup Gel Candies Due To Choking Hazard

Gemini Food Corporation is announcing the recall of mini-cup gel candies because they represent a choking hazard. This snack, distributed nationwide to retail establishments, is sold under the name of Jin Jin, and the label describes the products as Konjac Coconut Mini Gel Snack. This product also had been previously recalled by Walong on January 15, 2002. The candy comes in small sealed plastic cups that contain gelatin (with or without a chunk of fruit).

These candies contain the ingredient "konjac" (also known as conjac, konnyaku, yam flour, or glucomannan). Local authorities have reported four children's deaths from choking in the United States associated with this type of jelly candy. There have also been reports of deaths in other countries. Each jelly cup is about the size of a single-serve coffee creamer. The jelly cups are in a plastic bag or plastic jar. The flavors sold are: Lychee, Mango, Longan, Peach, Taro, Soursop, and assorted fruit flavors. Some of the candy bears warning labels suggesting that not recommended for children under 3 years old.

The FDA had issued two previous general warnings against consuming mini-cup gel candies that contain the ingredient "konjac." Although the agency issued an import alert to address importation of these candies in October, 2001, candies imported prior to the import alert are still in the US market. These candies are sold under various brand names, distributed by various companies. Gemini Food Corporation urges all consumers to return this product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (909)-839-0018.

Campbell Soup Company (NYSE:CPB) is voluntarily recalling one day's production, 19,792 cases (12 cans in a case) of its 18.7 ounce cans of soup labeled Campbell's Ready To Serve Classic Tomato because it may contain undeclared milk and soy protein. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk and/or soy proteins run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

The recalled soup was distributed in 37 states through retail stores. The states include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

The product comes in an 18.7-ounce can with a Ready To Serve banner, a photo of the product and the date code below stamped on two lines on the bottom of the can: NOV 2002 11211 CT KSYT (four numbers - XX:XX representing military time)

Campbell identified the labeling problem after receiving two consumer complaints. The recall was initiated after Campbell investigated the complaints and discovered that a small quantity of the milk- and soy protein-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of these ingredients. The mislabeled can contains Ready To Serve Classic Creamy Tomato Soup and not Ready To Serve Classic Tomato Soup as shown and described on the label. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem occurred because of an error in a plant's label controls.

Consumers who have known food allergies or sensitivities to milk and soy proteins should not eat this product. Consumers are urged to return the product to the store where it was purchased for a full refund. Should consumers have questions regarding the recall they should call Campbell's consumer hotline at 1-800-637-7687. The hotline is available 24 hours a day.

Korean Farm Announces Recall of Assi Brand Candies Due to Choking Hazard

Korean Farm is announcing the recall of mini-cup gel candies because they represent a choking hazard. This candy was distributed in California, Washington, Oregon, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Nevada, Arkansas, Utah, Maryland, and South Dakota to Korean and Asian Markets. It is sold under the name of Assi, and the label describes the product as "mini fruity gels." The candy comes in small sealed plastic cups that contain gelatin (with or without a chunk of fruit). These candies contain the ingredient "konjac" (also known as conjac, konnyaku, yam flour, or glucomannan). The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Food and Drug Administration consider this type of candy to pose a serious choking risk, particularly to infants, children, and the elderly. Local authorities have reported four children's deaths from choking in the United States associated with this type of jelly candy. There have also been reports of deaths in other countries.

Each jelly cup is about the size of a single-serve coffee creamer. The jelly cups are in a 1500g plastic jar. The flavors sold are Lychee, Mango, and Assorted. All of the product is under recall.

The FDA has issued two previous general warnings against consuming mini-cup gel candies that contain the ingredient "konjac". Although the agency issued an import alert to address importation of these candies in October, 2001, candies imported prior to the import alert are still in the US market. These candies are sold under various brand names, distributed by various companies. Korean Farm urges all consumers to return this product to the place of purchase for a full refund.  FDA ANNOUNCES TWO RECALLS OF JELLY CANDIES DUE TO CHOKING HAZARD

The FDA is announcing two recalls of all flavors of mini jelly candies because these products present a choking hazard. The candies are packaged in small sealed plastic cups. Each mini jelly cup is about the size of a single-serve coffee creamer.

These candies, which contain the ingredient "konjac," are being recalled because the FDA and the Consumer Product Safety Commission consider this type of candy to pose a serious choking risk, particularly to infants, children and the elderly. Unlike gelatin products commonly found in the United States, these candies do not readily dissolve when placed in the mouth and their size and other characteristics make them a serious choking hazard. Local authorities in the United States have reported six children's deaths from choking associated with this type of jelly candy. There have also been reports of deaths in other countries.

The first recall is by Golden Country Oriental Food, Chicago, Illinois. These candies were distributed in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Wisconsin, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, South Dakota, and Kansas. The three brand names include “Don-Empire”; another with no brand name and only Chinese characters and butterflies on the label; and "My Love and Coco.” The 16.5-17 gram individual serving cups are packaged in 300-gram plastic bags with 30 bags per case, 510 gram plastic panda bear shaped jars with 12 jars per case, and 1200 gram round plastic jars with 6 jars per case. Golden Country Oriental Food has requested a recall through its distributors and retailers to consumers, who are urged to return this product to the place of purchase. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 773-847-1700.

The second recall is by Five Continents Ltd., Chicago, Illinois. These candies were distributed in Indiana, Illinois, Nebraska, Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, Wisconsin, Missouri, Texas, Iowa, New Jersey, Kansas and South Dakota. The brand name is ABC brand Konjac Coconut Jelly Mini Fruit Bites Candy. The 16.5-17 gram individual serving cups are packaged in 300-gram plastic bags with 30 bags per case and 1500 gram plastic round and panda bear-shaped with 6 jars per case. Consumers are urged to return this product to the place of purchase. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 773-927-0100.

In August and October 2001, the FDA issued general warnings against consuming mini-cup gel candies that contain the ingredient "konjac." Numerous other firms have recalled these gel candies. In October 2001, the agency issued an Import Alert to prevent these kinds of candies from entering the country. Import Alerts identify problem commodities and communicate guidance to FDA field offices and the importing community for detention of products that appear to be in violation of the law. However, candies imported prior to the import alert are still in the US market. These candies are sold under various brand names and are distributed by various companies. The FDA continues to investigate and follow-up this issue.
