Oven Pride Recalls Northwest Market Fresh Labeled Ham & Cheese Wedge Sandwiches Because of Possible Health Risk
Oven
Pride of Seattle Washington is recalling 254 Ham & Cheese Wedge
Sandwiches with the Northwest Market Fresh Label attached and a best before
date of 05/07/02, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria
Monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal
infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened

and diarrhea, Listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among
pregnant women.

Ham & Cheese Wedge sandwich was distributed throughout the Puget Sound area
with the Northwest Market Fresh label in convenience stores only. The product
has a net weight of 7.25 oz (205g) and is packaged in a rigid plastic wedge
cup.The recall is the result of routine Washington State Department of
Agriculture microbiological sampling. Oven Pride has conducted subsequent
testing and all tests for Listeria have been negative.
All
254 sandwiches should have been removed from store shelves but "because of
the potential for foodborne illness, we wanted consumers to be aware of the
recall", said Steve Sposari, President of Oven Pride. Consumers who have
purchased this product are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a
full refund. Consumers with any questions can contact Oven Pride at

Balducci's
of New York, New York, is recalling its 11 ounce packages of Balducci's
Golden Raisins because the product contains sulfites. People who have severe
sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic
reaction if they consume these products.
The
recalled raisins were distributed through its Balducci's, Sutton Place Gourmet,
(Maryland, Virginia and DC locations), and Hay Day, (Scarsdale, N.Y. and
Connecticut locations) retail stores. The product is packaged in an 11-ounce,
clear plastic tub marked with UPC Code #5499606819. No illnesses have been
reported to date in connection with this problem.
The
recall was initiated after it was discovered through routine sampling by New
York State Food Inspectors that the product contained sulfites and were
distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of sulfites. The
consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to
elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in
certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of
sulfites.
Consumers
who have purchased the 11-ounce packages of Balducci's Golden Raisins are urged
to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with

being applied to the crust of the pies. There is no indication that this
condition existed prior to this event, however the company is removing all
product from stores as a precaution. No illnesses have been reported to date.

Nationwide Recall of Susie Brand Imported Cantaloupe Due to Potential Health Risk
The I. Kunik Company of McAllen, Texas is issuing a
nationwide voluntary recall of its Susie brand cantaloupes because of their
association with outbreaks of foodborne illness throughout the United States
and Canada. The outbreaks of Salmonella poona that have infected dozens
of people throughout parts of the United States and Canada are linked to the
Susie brand of cantaloupe which is imported from Mexico and distributed in the
United States and Canada.
Salmonella poona is an organism which can cause serious and
sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and
others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella
poona often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal
pain. In rare circumstances, infection can result in the organism getting into
the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections
(i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. The cantaloupe was sold
in retail stores and restaurants and possibly used in other institutions. Fresh
cantaloupe has a shelf life of 7-10 days.
This recall resulted from an FDA traceback of these
foodborne outbreaks. As a result of this investigation, FDA has taken steps to
prevent the importation of any other contaminated cantaloupe. FDA is detaining
all cantaloupe imported by I. Kunik from Mexico. The agency is also working
with the company, states and other government agencies to investigate this
matter. Retailers, restaurants and food service operations should determine if
any of their existing stock of cantaloupe was purchased or sold under the Susie
brand name, and if so, remove it from sale. Any cantaloupe bearing this brand
name should not be consumed.

Brooklyn, New York location. The product, "Sun Star Croaker" was
discovered and sampled by Department food inspectors during a routine
inspection at a retail market in Queens. Samples analyzed at the New York State
Food Laboratory confirmed that the fish had not been eviscerated prior to
processing. This product may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum
spores, which can cause Botulism, a serious and potentially fatal food-borne
illness.
The sale of this type of fish is prohibited under
New York State Agriculture and Markets regulations because Clostridium
botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any
other portion of the fish. Uneviscerated processed fish has been linked to
outbreaks of botulism poisoning. Symptoms of Botulism include blurred or double
vision, general weakness, poor reflexes, difficulty swallowing and respiratory
paralysis. Consumers who have "Sun Star Croaker" are advised not to
eat it.
The product is packaged in uncoded, 1 pound and 2
pound, sealed plastic bags. It is a product of China. It was distributed to
Chinese markets in Queens. Consumers with questions should contact the Law
Offices of Hanbin Wang, 277 Broadway Suite 1307, New York, NY 10007 at (212)
577-2220.
FDA
ANNOUNCES A RECALL BY EVERLASTING DISTRIBUTORS, INC OF "ABC" BRAND
MINI JELLY SNACK CUPS
The Food and Drug
Administration is announcing a recall by Everlasting Distributors, Inc., of
Bayonne, N.J., of 1,197 cases of mini jelly candies (or mini-cup gel candy)
because these products present a choking hazard. The product is distributed to
retail establishments throughout New York, Massachusetts, Illinois, Florida,
Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia under the
"ABC" brand.
The mini jelly candies come in six varieties: Durian Cocode Nut Jelly, Gueiling Gau Cocode Nut Jelly, Peach Cocode Nut Jelly, Taro Cocode Nut Jelly, Lychee Cocode Nut Jelly and Mango Cocode Nut Jelly. Each mini jelly cup is about the size of single-serve coffee creamer. The candies come in 14 oz. bags packed 30 to a case.
These candies contain the
ingredient "konjac" (also known as conjac, konnyaku, yam flour, or
glucomannan). The Food and Drug Administration and the Consumer Product Safety
Commission staff consider this type of candy to pose a serious choking risk,
particularly to infants, children and the elderly. There have been six
children's deaths from choking associated with this type of jelly candy
throughout the United States in recent years. There have also been reports of
deaths in other countries.
"FDA urges everyone to
avoid consuming these candies, which present a major choking hazard," said
Dr. Lester M. Crawford, FDA Deputy Commissioner. Consumers are urged to return
this product to the place of purchase. Consumers with questions may call
Everlasting Distributors, Inc., at 201-823-0800.
In August and October 2001, the FDA issued general warnings against consuming mini-cup gel candies that contain the ingredient "konjac." Other firms recalled gel candies. In October 2001, the agency issued an Import Alert. Import Alerts identify problem commodities and communicate guidance to FDA field offices and the importing community for detention of products that appear to be in violation of the law. However, candies imported prior to the import alert are still in the US market. This type of candy is sold under various brand names and are distributed by various companies. The FDA continues to investigate this issue.

Product: HOUSE OF RAEFORD brand White Turkey with

Codes: Produced November 1, 1999 to
May 16, 2002. Just above the Net Wt. Statement the shipping cases bear the
product ID code "963" or "96300" and a production code as

"0365" or "1001" through "1365" or

The tray labels bear the product ID code
"963-6" above the bar code and do not list "wheat flour"
and various other ingredients in the ingredient statement. If "wheat
flour" appears in the ingredient statement, this indicates a new corrected
label and the product is not part of the recall. The number "P-1234"
appears in the USDA mark of inspection on the tray labels and shipping cases.
Problem: The product is incorrectly labeled (misbranded)
by not declaring multiple ingredients including wheat flour (an allergen)
contained in the product.

personnel conducting a routine formulation monitoring task at the establishment
determined that the product was not correctly labeled.

The Food and Drug
Administration conducted a seizure of all New Choice Food mini-gel candies at
the firm's facility in Irwindale, California. This action was taken after the
agency determined that this product presented a choking hazard. To date, the
company has not recalled the product. These candies are distributed nationwide
to large retail establishments, Asian and Hispanic markets, and sold
internationally. They are packaged in small sealed plastic cups.
These candies contain the
ingredient "konjac" (also known as conjac, konnyaku, yam flour, or
glucomannan). The FDA and staff physiologists from the Consumer Product Safety
Commission consider this type of candy to pose a serious choking
risk, particularly to infants, children and the elderly. Unlike gelatin products
commonly found in the United States, these candies do not readily dissolve when
placed in the mouth. There have been six children's deaths reported from
choking in the U.S. associated with this type of gel candy. There have also
been reports of deaths in other countries.
The candies seized today are
sold under the brand names New Choice Mini Fruity Gels, Yummy Choice Fruit Gel
Snack, and Sheng Hsiang Jen (Chinese label) Conjac Coconut Jelly in the
following flavors: apple, grape, taro, lychee, peach, pineapple, mango, orange,
lemon, strawberry, and as "assorted" flavors. Each gel cup is about
the size of a single-serve coffee creamer. The gel cups are sold in 250 gram
(8.75 oz) and 300 gram (10.5 oz.) plastic bags or in 1100 gram (38.5 oz.) and
1500 gram (52.5 oz.) plastic jars. Some labels of these products have a warning
suggesting that they are a choking hazard, and some labels state that they
should not be consumed by children of various ages, ranging from 3 to 6 years
of age.
The State of California Food
and Drug Branch embargoed a large amount of this product at the Irwindale,
California warehouse. In August and October 2001,
the FDA issued general warnings against consuming mini-cup gel candies that
contain the ingredient "konjac." Other firms have voluntarily
recalled these gel candies.
Adamba Imports Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Peanuts in "Kasztanki" and "Viola" Chocolate Candy
Brooklyn, NY - May 20, 2002 -- Adamba Imports
International Inc., 585 Meserole St., Brooklyn, NY 11237, is recalling its 8
ounce packages of "Kasztanki" and "Viola" chocolate candies
because they contain undeclared peanuts. People who have allergies to peanuts
run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume
these products.
The recalled "Kasztanki" and
"Viola" chocolate candies were distributed in metropolitan NY retail
stores. The products come in an 8 ounce, clear plastic package marked
"Kasztanki" with UPC #76841-01272; and "Viola" with UPC
#76841-01275.
The recalls were initiated after it was discovered
that the peanut-containing products were distributed in packaging that did not
reveal the presence of peanuts. Distribution of these products has been
suspended until the company is certain that the problem has been corrected.
Consumers who have purchased 8 ounce packages of
"Kasztanki" and "Viola" chocolate candies are urged to
return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with
questions may contact the company at (718) 628-9700.
Morey's Seafood International LLC Recalls Morey's® Smoked Ciscoes Chubs Due to Possible Health Risk
Morey's Seafood
International LLC announced the voluntary recall of 1,169-lbs. of Morey's®
Smoked Ciscoes Chubs in retail sized packages, because it has the potential to
be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause
serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly
people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals
may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache,
stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can
cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
Morey's® Smoked Ciscoes
Chubs products included in this recall were distributed to retail stores, in
Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan,
Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
The recalled product is
packaged in individual weight packages which have a target weight of .75 lb and
carry on their perishable label (displayed on the front of the tray-packed
cellophane-wrapped package) a lot number "3990" and a "Not To Be
Sold or Consumed After" date of "5/25/02." The product was also
sold in bulk. The products have been available for purchase in supermarkets
since April 12, 2002. This voluntary recall includes 1,169 lbs. of Morey's®
Smoked Ciscoes Chubs produced at the company's Motley, Minnesota manufacturing
facility. No illnesses have been reported related to this recall.
The company was informed
Wednesday, May 22, 2002 by the Michigan Department of Agriculture that a single
.76 lb. package of this product, taken from a supermarket in Michigan during
routine testing on May 7, 2002, tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
Morey's independently tests its Smoked Ciscoes Chubs product weekly. Results
from an independent lab, in a report dated April 27, 2002, showed that a sample
from lot number 3990 tested negative for Listeria monocytogenes. The
specific lot of product has been recalled as a precautionary measure. Morey'
Seafood International is working closely with the FDA to ensure quick recovery
of the recalled product.
Consumers are asked to check any Morey's® Smoked Ciscoes Chubs, that they have purchased, for the above-mentioned numbers, and if they match, to return the product to the store of purchase for a full refund. No other Morey's products, including Morey's® Smoked Ciscoes Chubs with any other "Not To Be Sold or Consumed After" dates, are affected by this recall. Morey's Seafood International's number one manufacturing concern is the quality and safety of its products. Customers with additional questions are asked to call Morey's Consumer Hotline at 1-800-808-FISH (3474).

Renaissance Bakery
Issues an Alert for Undeclared Walnuts in "Apple Harvest" Bread
Renaissance
Bakery of Corona, New York, is recalling 24 oz. packages of "Apple
Harvest" Bread with labels that do not declare WALNUTS as an ingredient.
People who have allergies to Walnuts can run the risk of serious
life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. The recalled
bread was distributed to approximately 7 independent markets in the New York
City area between 5/8 & 5/18 2002. It is estimated that 15 packages are
included in this alert.
The
recall was initiated after it was discovered that the walnut containing product
was distributed in packaging that did not disclose the presence of walnuts.
Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was due to a temporary breakdown
in the company's label printing process. The problem has been corrected.
Consumers who have purchased the "Apple Harvest" bread are urged to
return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with
questions may contact the company at 718-335-9539.
