Dudek Foods, Inc. Issues a Mislabeling Alert on Undeclared Whey, Wheat, Soy and Certain Dairy Ingredients in Cabbage Soup and Certain Pierogis

 

Dudek Foods, Inc. of Hamtrack, Michigan is recalling 1-quart Kapusniak ("Cabbage Soup") jars and 16 oz. boxed and packaged Pierogi Mushroom, Potato, Potato Cheddar, Potato Chive ("Pierogi") because it may contain undeclared whey, wheat, soy and dairy ingredients. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to whey, wheat, soy and certain dairy ingredients run the risk of an allergic reaction if they consume these products.

 

Kapusniak (Cabbage Soup) was distributed in Michigan in the metropolitan Detroit area through retail stores such as Farmer Jack, Kowalski, Old Country Deli, Oakridge Markets, Twentieth Century, Danny Zeb's Party Store, and Shoppers Market and at the Dudek Foods retail store.

The product comes in a 1-quart (one-quart) glass jar, with a label clearly marked "KAPUSNIAK" (Cabbage Soup) under the brand name of Dudek Foods, Inc. with an expiration date -- before and including 12/29/02. Mushroom, Potato, Potato Cheddar, Potato Chive Pierogis were distributed in 16 oz. boxes and packages in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio through Farmer Jack, Kroger and Meijer and other distributor outlets.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that whey, wheat, soy and certain dairy ingredients contained in the product were distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of whey, wheat, soy and certain dairy ingredients. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company's packaging process. The problem is being corrected by replacing labels or exchanging product.

 

Consumers who have purchased 1-quart (one-quart) glass jars of "Kapusniak" (Cabbage Soup) or the 16 oz. boxed and packaged Pierogis are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (313) 891-5226.

Kemps Foods Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Peanuts in Hagan Pennsylvania Vanilla Ice Cream

 

Lancaster, PA - May 29, 2002 -- Kemps Foods of Lancaster, PA is voluntarily recalling 1/2 gallon containers of Hagan Pennsylvania Vanilla Ice Cream because it contains Peanut Butter Ice Cream. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product. The product was distributed in West Virginia, Western Maryland, Eastern Ohio, and Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania, through retail stores.

 

The product comes in a l/2 gallon seround (oval 1/2 gallon) paper container that is labeled Pennsylvania Vanilla, but the lid of the container is labeled Peanut Butter Bender. The product inside the container is Peanut Butter Bender Ice Cream. The product code is 0952 and is marked on the bottom of the container.

 

The recall was immediately issued after the peanut containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of peanuts. Investigation indicates that the problem was caused by a packaging error during the production process that has been corrected.

Anxuyen Bakery Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Eggs and Milk in Sweet Rolls

 

Anxuyen Bakery, Seatac, WA is recalling 12 oz. packages of sweet rolls, because they contain undeclared eggs and milk. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs or milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. The sweet rolls were distributed to Asian retail markets in Seattle, WA.

 

The sweet rolls are packaged in a clear plastic bag labeled ANXUYEN BAKERY and a picture of 3 different bread products. Each bag contains 12 rolls. The product name, sweet rolls, is not stated on the package. There is no manufacturing code on the product.

 

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that product containing milk and eggs was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of milk and eggs. Market Basket Brand Oats & More® with Honey Cereal Recalled Due to Undeclared Almonds

 

Demoulas Super Markets, Inc. of Tewksbury, Massachusetts is recalling 396 cases (4,752 cartons) of Market Basket Brand Oats & More® with Honey cereal bearing the “Best If Used By” Date Code of “APR1103J2” (found on the box top) because the product may contain undeclared almonds. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to almonds run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergenic reaction if they consume this product.

 

Market Basket Oats & More® with Honey cereal was distributed through Market Basket Stores in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The product is packaged in cartons containing 16 oz. of product.

 

The recall was initiated after a question was raised with Market Basket personnel about the possible presence of almond slices in the product although they were not listed as an ingredient. Subsequent investigation indicated that the problem was due to a procedural error related to the packaging process of the manufacturer of the cereal which has since been corrected.

Consumer Alert: Undeclared Eggs in Ball Cake

 

State Agriculture Commissioner Nathan L. Rudgers today warned consumers who are sensitive to eggs not to consume "Ball Cake" sold by Fu Zhou Tin Trading Corp., 135-37 40th Road, Flushing, New York 11354. The product has been found to contain undeclared eggs.

"Ball Cake" is packaged in a 50 gram, orange and green, plastic bag with code 2001 01 03A3. All other labeling is in Chinese. It was sold in the Flushing, Queens area of New York City. Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors revealed the product contained eggs, which were not declared on the label.

 

The consumption of eggs by allergic individuals has been reported to elicit severe reaction. Life-threatening anaphylactic shock can occur in certain egg sensitive individuals upon consumption of eggs and products containing eggs. No illnesses have been reported to date. Consumers who purchased "Ball Cake" from Fu Zhou Tin Trading Corp. should return it to the firm.

Starway Incorporated, located at 137 Grattan Street, Brooklyn, NY, 11237, is recalling 7.05 oz. packages of EGO brand Famous Dried Mangoes because the product contains undeclared sulfites. People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem. The EGO brand Famous Dried Mangoes, a product of Singapore, is distributed in heat sealed 7.05 oz. plastic bags, with UPC code 29173 10309. Product was distributed in the New York Metropolitan Area.

 

The recall was initiated after it was discovered through routine sampling by NYS Dept of Agriculture & Markets Food Inspectors that the product containing sulfites, was distributed in packaging that did not declare the presence of sulfites.
The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of the EGO brand Famous Dried Mangoes revealed that it contained 29.4 milligrams per serving.

Sara Lee Bakery Group Recalls Earth Grains Onion Buns Due to Undeclared Egg

 

Sara Lee Bakery Group is voluntarily recalling 8-count, 19-ounce packages of Earth Grains Onion Buns marked for purchase between June 15 and 28, 2002, because they contain egg as an ingredient that is not listed on the package.

 

Consumption of this product by people who have an allergy or sensitivity to eggs may result in a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction. This product only poses a potential hazard to egg-sensitive individuals. The buns are safe for all other people to consume. The company has not received any consumer complaints regarding these buns.

 

Sara Lee Bakery Group is working together with the FDA in undertaking a voluntary recall of this product and also has notified the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network. The package mislabeling was discovered during a routine FDA bakery inspection. Production was immediately suspended. The mislabeled packages have been removed from store shelves but may still be in consumer possession.

The buns were distributed in all or parts of the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

 

The affected packages may be identified by looking for the recommended purchase date, which is either contained on a sticker, printed directly on the bag, or contained on the plastic bag-closure clip. New York State Agriculture Commissioner Nathan L. Rudgers today warned sulfite-allergic consumers and asthmatics to avoid consuming "Siamese Coins Sour Bamboo Shoot Tip" due to the presence of undeclared sulfites in the product.

 

The product was sold by the Vientian Grocery, 1415 N. Clinton Avenue, Rochester, New York. "Siamese Coins Sour Bamboo Shoot Tip" is packaged in a 24-ounce glass container. It is not coded and is a product of Thailand. It was sold in the Rochester area.

 

Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors revealed the product contained high levels of sulfites, which were not declared on the label. Sulfites can cause deadly reactions in asthmatics and others suffering sulfite allergies. Consumers who purchased "Siamese Coins Sour Bamboo Shoot Tip" from the Vientian Grocery should return it to the store.

De Choix Specialty Foods Co. Recalls L'or Des Domes Au Lait Brand St. Nectaire Cheese Because of Possible Health Risk

 

De Choix Specialty Foods Company located at 58-25 52nd Avenue, Woodside, NY 11377 is recalling 20 cases each containing 3 wheels of l'or des Domes brand St. Nectaire semi soft cheese because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

 

The semi soft cheese was imported from France and distributed in paper wrapped wheels each approx. 4 lbs. The recalled cheese has a production date of 14/04/02 (April 14, 2002) and bears Lot # 0004114. The semi soft cheese was distributed to restaurants, gourmet shops and distributors located in New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio and California.

 

This recall is a result of routine sampling done by the FDA which revealed that the product contained Listeria monocytogenes. Distribution of this product has been suspended while the company continues their investigation as to the source of the problem.
