Eden Brook Fish Market Inc. Recalls Thirty-Five Pounds of Smoked Trout Because of Possible Health Risk

Eden Brook Fish Market Inc., 73 Pleasant St., Monticello, NY 12701 is recalling its smoked trout code # 0621 because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy persons may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriage and stillbirth among pregnant women. The recalled smoked trout with code #0621, was sold wholesale and retail, in the New York City, Westchester and Sullivan County areas. No illness has been reported to date in connection with the problem.

The potential for contamination was noted after routine sampling and testing by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Market Food Inspectors revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogens in some of the smoked trout. Production of the product has been suspended while the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets continues their investigation as to the source of the problem.

Mrs. Smith's Bakeries Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Whey in Snack Carrot Cake

Mrs. Smith's Bakeries, is voluntarily recalling its 3.5 ounce packages of Mrs. Freshley's, BlueBird, Aunt Hannah, and Blue Ribbon carrot cake because they may contain undeclared whey, a diary product. The recalled snack carrot cakes were distributed nationwide in retail stores and through vending machines. The product comes in a 3.5 ounce, clear plastic package marked with "best used by" date of August 4th or earlier. The problem has been corrected and production of the product has resumed.

Consumers who have purchased 3.5 ounce packages of Mrs. Freshley's, BlueBird, Aunt Hannah, or Blue Ribbon carrot cake with a "best if used by" date of August 4th or earlier are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumer Alert: Undeclared Eggs in Homerun Ball Biscuits

State Agriculture Commissioner Nathan L. Rudgers today issued an alert to consumers who are sensitive to eggs, not to consume Homerun Ball Biscuits distributed by T Up Trading, Inc., 60 Metroway, Seacaucus, New Jersey, 07094 due to the presence of undeclared eggs. People who have allergies to eggs run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products. Homerun Ball Biscuits are packaged in 155-gram (5.46 ounces) plastic containers within a foiled bag. The container code is 20 03-03-28. The biscuits are a product of Korea.

Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors revealed the product contained undeclared eggs. The product was distributed in the New York Metropolitan area. No illnesses have been reported to date. Consumers who are allergic to eggs and purchased Homerun Ball Biscuits are urged to return them to the place of purchase.

FDA ALERTS PUBLIC AGAINST CONJAC CANDY CHOKING HAZARD

The Food and Drug Administration is announcing a recall by Thomas Diaz, Inc., of Toa Baja, Puerto Rico of 1,500 cartons of Fruzel assorted Natural Fruit Jelly Candy because these products present a choking hazard. The product is distributed to wholesale and retail establishments throughout Puerto Rico under the " Neo USA" brand.

The mini jelly candies come in assorted flavors. Each mini jelly cup is about the size of single-serve coffee creamer. The candies are packaged in 16.5 gram jars with 88 units per jar. These candies contain the ingredient "konjac" (also known as conjac, konnyaku, yam flour, or glucomannan). The Food and Drug Administration and the Consumer Product Safety Commission staff consider this type of candy to pose a serious choking risk, particularly to infants, children and the elderly. There have been six children's deaths from choking associated with this type of jelly candy throughout the United States in recent years. There have also been reports of deaths in other countries.
"FDA continues to warn consumers about this product, which poses a risk that must not be tolerated," said Dr. Lester M. Crawford, FDA Deputy Commissioner. Consumers are urged to return this product to the place of purchase. Consumers with questions may call Thomas Diaz, Inc., at (787) 784-5606.

In August and October 2001, the FDA issued general warnings against consuming mini-cup gel candies that contain the ingredient "konjac." Other firms recalled gel candies. In October 2001, the agency issued an Import Alert. Import Alerts identify problem commodities and communicate guidance to FDA field offices and the importing community for detention of products that appear to be in violation of the law. However, candies imported prior to the import alert are still in the US market. This type of candy is sold under various brand names and are distributed by various companies. The FDA continues to investigate this issue.

Problem: The product is turkey franks incorrectly labeled (misbranded) as beef franks.

Discovered: On 7/11/02, the firm's quality assurance staff determined, through monitoring, that the product had been incorrectly labeled.

Don Berto's Baking Co. Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Milk Product in Tomato Pies

Don Berto's Baking Co. of Philadelphia, PA, is recalling 1400 tomato pies because they may contain undeclared traces of milk that was a sub ingredient of romano cheese. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product.

Tomato pies were distributed to PA, NJ, DE, MD and reached consumers thru D.I. Mathews who distributed the product to retail stores. Tomato pies were packaged on 9x12 inch styrofoam plate then shrink wrapped. Product is labeled as Don Berto's Tomato Pie. As of July 11, 2002, one allergic reaction has been reported.

The recall was initiated when a child in New Jersey had an allergic reaction after consuming this product. Romano cheese was added to the sauce which contains milk, a known allergen, and was not declared on the product label. Consumers who have purchased this product and are allergic to milk or milk product should not consume this product and return it to the place of purchase. Spice World Recalls 1 oz. Basil Leaves Because of Possible Health Risk

Spice World, Inc. of Orlando, FL is voluntarily recalling 1 oz. plastic bottles of Spice World brand BASIL LEAVES, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illness such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), and endocarditis and arthritis.

Fifty-two (52) cases (1,248 bottles) or BASIL LEAVES were distributed through supermarkets in South Florida. The product is packed in 1 oz. plastic bottles with a green and white label stating Spice World brand BASIL LEAVES with the code"0912" stamped in ink on the label.

When BASIL LEAVES are used in preparing foods cooked at 165 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, the risk of food borne illness due to Salmonella is significantly reduced. Nevertheless, the company understands that some customers may not cook this product at such temperatures and wishes to notify the public accordingly. No illnesses have been reported to date. The company has ceased distribution of the product with the code date in question.

Consumers who have purchased Spice World 1 oz. BASIL LEAVES, coded 0912, are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-433-4979

Blue and White Food Products Corp. Recalls Sabra Salads Lox Spread Because of Possible Health Risk

Blue and White Food Corp. of Astoria NY, is recalling its 7 ounce plastic containers of "Sabra Salads Lox Spread (Smoked Nova Scotia Salmon)" because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy persons may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The recalled Sabra Salad Lox Spread was distributed in the NYC Metropolitan area, in retail stores. The product comes in 7ounce plastic containers marked with the code 090102 on the lid. The potential for contamination was noted after routine sampling by NYS Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in some 7 ounce containers of Sabra Salad Lox Spread. Production of the product has been suspended while the company continues their investigation as to the source of the problem.

Consumers who have purchased 7ounce packages of Sabra Salads Lox Spread are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 718-932-9000.
