"Viola Filled Chocolates" because they may contain undeclared
peanuts. People who have allergies to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening
allergic reactions if they consume this product.
The
recalled "Viola Filled Chocolates," packaged in 8 oz. clear plastic
bags with UPC Code 7485432033, were sold nationwide. They are a product of
Poland.
No
illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

Sweetened Jujube
J.V. Trading Glendale Ltd., 385 W. John
St., Hicksville, NY 11801 is recalling packages of LUKAI brand SWEETENED JUJUBE
because the product contains undeclared sulfites. People who have a severe
sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic
reaction if they consume this product.
SWEETENED JUJUBE was distributed
nationwide through retail stores and wholesale distributors. SWEETENED JUJUBE
is packaged in 235gr. (8.3 oz) sealed plastic bags with red, tan, and yellow
labeling, mostly all Chinese writing with a brief product introduction in
English on the back of the package. The product code is Q/ CLB03-2001 and can
be found on back of package.
Consumers who have purchased LUKAI SWEETENED JUJUBE in 235 gr (8.3
oz) plastic packages can return it to J.V. Trading Glendale Ltd. at the above

Schwartz Appetizing Inc. Recalls Schmaltz Herring, Code 08/06, Because of Possible Health Risk

APPETIZING INC. located at 4824 16th Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, is recalling 7
oz. containers of SCHMALTZ HERRING, CODE 08/06, because it has the
potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism
which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail
or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
The
7 oz. containers of SCHMALTZ HERRING were sold to retail customers in
Monroe and Brooklyn, New York, and through the firm’s own retail store.
The product was sold in plastic containers with a stick-on label bearing code date “08/06” (on the bottom of the container) and UPC number 7 87434 22222 1.

Product(s) Recalled: Head Cheese
Production Dates/Identifying Codes: Produced 5/3/2003 and
6/7/2003. The products being recalled are 4 -8 oz. packages of “APCO brand
meats HEAD CHEESE,” bearing the package date “5/05/03” or “6/09/03.” Each
package also bears the establishment code “EST. 602” inside the USDA seal of
inspection.
Problem/Reason for Recall:The products contain sodium
nitrite, but the product label does not list sodium nitrite as an ingredient.
How/When Discovered:The inspector-in-charge
(IIC) noticed a mislabeling problem, the label did not include the ingredient
sodium nitrite, and notified plant management. Plant management immediately
notified their consignees and started the voluntary recall process. The
establishment indicated and the IIC confirmed that the sodium nitrite level in
the product is within the regulatory requirements.

Cheese Co. of Eureka, CA is recalling 19 wheels of Capricious Washed Curd
Cheese because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria
monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal
infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened
immune systems.
Eleven
wheels of Capricious Cheese were distributed in California, in retail stores in
the San Francisco Bay area and, during June, in Farmer's Markets in San
Francisco, Davis, and Arcata.
Capricious
Washed Curd Cheese comes in 7-8 pound wheels. There is an identifying green
stamp of 01/28/03 on the side and bottom of the cheese. However, since these
wheels were sold in slices, there are no identifying characteristics.

Energy
Club, Inc. of Pacoima, California is recalling its Nutty Fruit Mix product
because it may contain undeclared sulfites.
Nutty
Fruit Mix was distributed nation-wide throughout the continental United States
and may have been purchased by consumers in various retail establishments.
The
product can be identified by its bright yellow and orange header cards with the
Energy Club logo visible on the lower portion of the front panel. The header
card is attached to a see-through cellophane bag clearly displaying the
product.
The
recall was initiated after it was discovered that the Nutty Fruit Mix product
containing sulfites was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the
presence of the sulfites. Production has been suspended until the company is
certain that the problem has been corrected.

How/When
Discovered:Two
consumer complaints were reported to the USDA consumer complaint monitoring
system, CCMS, due to illnesses with E. coli O157:H7 in Colorado.
As a result, the Food Safety and Inspection Service, FSIS, analyzed an
investigative sample of the implicated product that turned positive results for
the E. coli O157:H7 on August 4, 2003. At present,
there is no definitive link implicating the recalled product to the two
illnesses; however, FSIS is continuing its investigation.

products may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7.
How/When
Discovered: An
illness with E. coli O157:H7 in the State of Wisconsin triggered an
investigation by the State of Wisconsin’s Department of Health and resulted in
sampling ground beef products from the recalling firm below. The sampling by
Wisconsin’s Agriculture Laboratory turned positive results for E. coli O157:H7
in ground beef that were reported to the Food Safety and Inspection Service,
FSIS, on 8/22/2003. Accordingly, upon FSIS's notification of the positive lab
results, the firm initiated the recall action voluntarily. At present, there is
no definitive link implicating the recalled products to the illnesses; however,
FSIS is continuing its investigation.
