Kmart Corp. Announces Recall of Table Lamps

Kmart Corp. of Troy, Mich., is recalling about 41,300 table lamps. The lamps can short circuit and ignite, creating a fire hazard.

Kmart has received 12 reports of the lamps short-circuiting. Five of the incidents resulted in fire, causing minor damage to various household items.

The table lamp, measuring 15 1/4 inches high, is made of bronze-colored metal with two frosted white shades. The base of the lamp is shaped like a lily pad and the shades are shaped like lily flowers. A gold sticker on the bottom of the lamp reads, "Made in China." A clear sticker on the bulb socket reads in part, "...Use 25 watt type B or smaller lamp...E123788..." The lamp is packaged in a cardboard box. The box is labeled in part, "Basic Editions...Lily Table Lamp...Style R8831...UL Listed..." There is a photograph of the lamp on the box. Kmart stores nationwide sold the lamps from November 1996 through April 1997 for about $20.

Consumers should stop using the lamps immediately and return them to any Kmart store for a full refund. For more information about this recall, consumers should call Kmart at (800) 63K-MART.
